The Scottish ResearcH partnership for Air Pollution health Effects (SHAPE) is a collaboration between individual researchers and practitioners in academia and research institutions based in Scotland, with a focus on key aspects of monitoring and modelling of air pollution and its effects on human health.

As a community of practice, SHAPE is closely aligned with stakeholders in policy and regulatory agencies, as well as NGOs and other groups
with a keen interest in air pollution and its effects.

The core objectives and activities of SHAPE are to:

  • promote the understanding of air pollution and its effects across the academic, stakeholder and public sector communities;
  • exchange information and staff and host joint PhD studentships and PostDoc research associates to foster mutual learning and knowledge transfer;
  • conduct collaborative research into the emissions of air pollutants, modelling and monitoring of ambient concentrations and their exposure and effect on the health of individuals and populations;
  • develop methods for the integration of reference air quality monitoring networks and novel, low-cost measurement activities of air pollution, including citizen science and crowd sourcing approaches; and to
  • contribute to the development of the research agenda on improving air quality in Scotland and beyond.

SHAPE builds on already existing relationships and collaborations between individual researchers and institutions.

It aims to strengthen the Scottish air pollution research community and to better coordinate the dialogue with policy makers, who are faced by the development of more stringent air quality guidelines, limit values and long-term strategies (e.g. the Low Emission Strategy), while the demand for transport and the use of biomass for industrial and domestic energy production increases.

By integrating across different organisations and scientific disciplines, SHAPE adds value to already ongoing research and provides opportunities for the development of future strategic research activities in and for Scotland and the UK.

News:
  • SHAPE and the CitiSense FP7 project will organise a workshop on the "Use of 'low-cost' sensor technology to monitor air quality and engage citizens" at the COSLA Conference Centre near Haymarket Station, Edinburgh on 30 March 2016. The workshop is funded by the SECURE EPSRC Network. You can register for this event here.
